How to make any dessert diabetic-friendly β three evidence rules
You don't need a special "diabetic dessert recipe." You need to repair the one you already have. These three rules come straight from Database v0.1's documented swap rules, each one cited.

1. Swap the concentrated sugar first, since that's where the spike lives.
The single biggest lever in most desserts is the granulated sugar. Database v0.1 swaps white sugar for erythritol at 1:1 by volume, or for allulose at about 1β cups per cup of sugar. Both carry a glycemic index near 0 versus sugar's ~65, so replacing the sugar removes most of the blood-sugar load before you touch anything else. 2. Match the swap to the bake, because the ratio is not always 1:1.
A swap only helps if the dessert still works. Allulose participates in Maillard browning, so it browns faster than sugar and needs a watchful eye. Erythritol bakes close to 1:1 but leaves cakes drier, so add 1 to 2 tablespoons of liquid per cup swapped. Pure stevia extract is never a 1:1 swap: it's 200 to 250 times sweeter than sugar, so about 1 teaspoon replaces a whole cup, and you lose the bulk sugar it would have provided. That mistake causes most stevia baking failures; the stevia guide covers it.

3. Don't assume "natural" or "sugar-free" means lower-impact.
Some swaps that sound healthier aren't. Database v0.1 records that swapping raisins for sweetened dried cranberries moves to a higher sugar density, and that cornstarch β tapioca starch keeps both ingredients high-spike. The tool refuses to suggest either as an improvement. Honey, maple syrup and agave stay bucketed high-spike despite "natural" marketing. When a swap isn't a real improvement, the honest answer is portion reduction, and the tool says so instead of inventing a win.

What actually spikes blood sugar in a dessert
Two things drive a dessert's blood-sugar impact: the glycemic index (GI) of each ingredient, which is how fast its carbohydrate raises blood glucose, and the portion load, which is how much of that carbohydrate a realistic serving actually delivers. A food can be dangerous on one axis and harmless on the other, which is why a single number on a package rarely tells the whole story.
That's also why Database v0.1 applies a high-spike override: honey, maple syrup, agave, molasses, white, brown and powdered sugar, corn syrup, date syrup, and dried fruit are always bucketed high-spike, regardless of their measured GI. Agave, for instance, has a low measured GI of about 17 to 19 because it's mostly fructose. A realistic quarter-cup pour is still a large sugar dose, though, and fructose carries its own metabolic cost. Judging it by GI alone would call a heavy sugar load "safe." The practical upshot: watch the concentrated sugars and syrups first (high on both axes), be portion-aware with moderate-GI staples, and don't be reassured by a low GI number attached to a very sugar-dense ingredient.

Can diabetics eat dessert?
Generally yes, as part of an overall eating plan. Most people with diabetes manage total carbohydrate and blood-sugar impact rather than avoid every sweet food. It depends on the bake. For a close 1:1 swap that measures like sugar, Database v0.1 points to erythritol or a pre-formulated erythritol blend. For browning and structure closest to real sugar, allulose works best, used at about 1β times the volume. Pure stevia and monk-fruit extracts are non-glycemic but need a bulking agent, so neither is ever a volume-for-volume swap.

No. About 90% of ingested erythritol is absorbed and excreted unchanged in urine, without being metabolized as sugar. That gives it a glycemic index near zero and no meaningful effect on blood sugar at typical baking levels. A separate 2023 cardiovascular association study is worth knowing about, but it didn't change erythritol's blood-glucose profile or its FDA GRAS status.

Treat it cautiously. "Net carbs" has no FDA definition, so two products with identical ingredients can legally print different net-carb figures, depending on how much sugar alcohol each brand subtracts. Not meaningfully, for blood-sugar purposes. Database v0.1 buckets honey, maple syrup, and agave as high-spike alongside white sugar. They're concentrated sugars, and a realistic dessert portion carries a large glycemic load even when a syrup's isolated GI looks moderate. The word "natural" describes where a sweetener comes from. It says nothing about blood-sugar impact.
